A serious accident on the Highland stretch of the A9 caused delays for motorists today.
The two-car accident near Newtonmore at 12.45pm closed the road for a time while firefighters from Newtonmore, Kingussie and Aviemore assisted at the scene.
Using cutting gear the firefighters were able to free a man from one of the vehicles and he was then flown by air ambulance to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries wasn’t known.
The fire crews had left the scene by 2.10pm.
Traffic problems on the A9 were exacerbated later in the day when a jack-knifed lorry at Dalnaspidal at 2pm closed both carriageways north and south.
Motorists were warned to avoid the area if possible and follow diversions.
The northbound carriageway was quickly reopened, relieving some of the pressure though traffic flow remained “restricted” for some time.
