A Perth restaurateur is returning to Nepal for the first time since earthquakes devastated his homeland.
Bhola Khanal, the manager of the Everest Inn in Perth, was shocked by the quakes which claimed the lives of two children from his wife’s family.
Now he has decided to return to Nepal next month to visit family members who have been badly affected by the disaster.
Along with his daughter Prabina he is hoping to take vital supplies and is appealing for help to buy items such as waterproof jackets, sleeping bags and materials for shelters.
“A huge amount of food and water purification kits have already been distributed, and the focus is now on ensuring that everyone has adequate shelter for use during the imminent monsoon,” said Bhola.
“Many families in Kathmandu, as well as further afield, do not yet have shelter that will withstand the heavy rains that are coming, and exposure to the elements is a severe health risk to those already weakened by the deprivation and trauma caused by the two recent earthquakes and countless aftershocks.”
Bhola was born in Ramkot, a village 7km to the west of Kathmandu, and the nearby areas of Sitapaila and Bhimdunga are reportedly among the worst-hit areas in Kathmandu.
He is committed to distributing essential supplies to these areas during his two-week stay and has already asked his nephew, who lives there, to identify those who are in greatest need.
“All donations, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and will make a big difference to individual lives in Nepal in the coming weeks and months,” said Bhola.
“It is crucial that we act now in order to reduce people’s suffering during the coming monsoon.
“We will endeavour to ensure that every penny and item donated goes to where it is needed most and can make the biggest difference.”
He has the goal of reaching out to 100 families, or around 500 individuals, while he is in Kathmandu and donations can be handed in to the Everest Inn, South Methven Street, Perth, or contact 01738 622563 or perth@everestinn.co.uk
