The SNP has been urged to apologise over a Twitter remark, referring to the domestic abuse allegations against ousted member Bill Walker, made using one of its accounts.
A tweet was posted to former Tory candidate James Reekie, saying: ”It must sting knowing more than 5x as many people voted for an alleged wife-beater than for you”.
The comment, made using the @DunfermlineSNP account, was later removed but not before it had been retweeted by disgusted users.
Mr Walker, who was kicked out of the SNP last month amid allegations he assaulted his former wives, is to appear at Dunfermline Sheriff Court next month on a series of charges relating to domestic assault.
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie insisted the Nationalists should say sorry for the comment and investigate how the Dunfermline Twitter account is being administered.
He told The Courier: ”Such poorly judged and insensitive comments regarding such a serious case were ill advised and the SNP should apologise immediately.”
It remained unclear last night who used the @DunfermlineSNP account to make the inflammatory remark, but a spokesman for the SNP distanced the party from it, stating: ”These comments were totally inappropriate and in no way reflect the views of the SNP.”
A Twitter reply to The Courier from @DunfermlineSNP said: ”A tweet was made by an individual as part of a wider, heated conversation initiated by Mr Reekie. This was in no way endorsed by the SNP and was subsequently retracted.”
