An elderly man has died five days after he was seriously injured in a head-on crash between two cars.
The 86-year-old driver passed away at Ayr Hospital on Thursday following the collision on the B743, near to the Auchencruive Agricultural College, on Saturday evening.
He was driving a silver Mercedes A150 at around 5.30pm that crashed with a black BMW 116 series going the opposite way.
The man, named by his family only as Mr Allan, was taken to hospital along with his 85-year-old female passenger. She was later released after treatment.
The 30-year-old man driving the BMW and two child passengers, a five- year-old girl and seven-year-old boy, were also treated and released from hospital.
Sergeant Kevin Blackley said: “Although the road is a country road, it’s only a couple of miles long and is on the outskirts of Ayr and near to the village of Mossblown.
“At this time of night, it can be relatively busy and indeed, a number of people did stop to assist following the crash, however, we would appeal to anyone who saw the crash and who has not yet spoken to police, to get in touch.
“If you saw the crash, the vehicles prior to the crash or have any information that will assist officers with their investigation, then please contact Irvine Road Policing Department on 101 quoting incident number 3012 of 16/12/17.”
