A young woman seriously injured in a crash missed by Police Scotland has died in hospital.

Lamara Bell spent three days trapped in a car with her dead boyfriend John Yuill after police failed to respond to a call from a member of the public who had seen their car crashed off a slip road on the M9 near Stirling.

Ms Bell was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but she has sadly lost her fight for life.

Her brother Martin announced the news on Facebook this morning.

He wrote: “My sister just passed away.”

Her family had been keeping a vigil at her bedside.

A statement on behalf of the Yuill family said: “The family of John Yuill would like to say that their prayers and thoughts are with Lamara and her family.

“We are devastated by the sad news this morning.

“The families have messaged each other this morning and our thoughts are with John and Lamara’s children at this very sad time.”

Chief Constable Sir Stephen House has already apologised to the families, saying they had been let down by the national force.

Reacting to news of Ms Bell’s death, he said: “On behalf of Police Scotland, we are all deeply saddened by the news of Lamara Bell’s death this morning and I would personally like to express my deepest sympathies to her family and friends for their loss.

“We will continue to co-operate fully with the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner as they undertake their investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident.”
