MSP’s call to protect rights of same-sex marriage objectors

A leading Tory has demanded legal safeguards to protect the civil liberties of those opposed to same-sex marriage.

MSP Murdo Fraser was among those at a Scotland For Marriage meeting attended by around 30 supporters at the Atholl Arms Hotel in Dunkeld.

The former deputy leader of the Scottish Tories, who is a list MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, said: “There are few issues which feature so prominently in my constituency mail bag as that of same-sex marriage.

“It is clear there are many local residents who are very concerned about the Scottish Government’s proposals to legalise same-sex marriage, and in particular the impact this might have on religious freedom.

“I was pleased to attend the event at Dunkeld and meet constituents with serious concerns about this. If it is to proceed, it is essential that appropriate safeguards are put in place to ensure that liberties are not adversely affected.”

The Scotland For Marriage umbrella group is in the forefront of the campaign fighting plans to redefine the law.

The Government insists no member of the clergy will be forced to perform a gay marriage.

But same-sex marriage opponents say their concerns go much deeper as equality laws will impact on the civil liberties of all.
