Drivers travelling over the Forth Road Bridge are facing disruption from today as temporary traffic management measures for the Forth replacement crossing project begin.
The measures will be in place on the M9 between Newbridge and Winchburgh (Junctions 1 to 2), the M9 spur and on the A90 south of the Forth Road Bridge to Scotstoun Junction as part of the M9 Junction 1a upgrade at Kirkliston.
The works include the closure of hard shoulders and lane restrictions, together with a mandatory 40mph limit.
Various other traffic management measures will be in place until spring 2013, including average speed cameras.
Steven Brown, roads and infrastructure manager for Transport Scotland, said: ”This traffic management is an essential part of minimising the Forth replacement crossing project’s construction impact on journey times and public safety.
”These works are essential for the upgrade of M9 Junction 1a, which is vital to the wider FRC scheme.
”The 40mph speed limit and average speed cameras will help ensure a steady flow of traffic and help maintain the safety of the travelling public and contractors on the site.”
Road signs informing motorists of the planned works have been in place for two weeks and Traffic Scotland’s Variable Message Signs are also being used to inform the public.
