Police are investigating comments made online about Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson.

A man claiming to be a Rangers fan posted on Twitter that Mr Thompson is ”a dead man walking” and suggested he should ”watch out”.

The user, calling himself @bluenosestew, then responds to criticism of his comments by posting: “I DONT CARE A **** IF I GET LIFTED SFA, SPL AND REFS ARE ****** **** ALL IN IT TOGETHER!”

He was apparently upset by the £100,000 United were due to receive from Rangers after a Scottish Cup tie, given the financial predicament the Glasgow club is now in after going into administration.

He also makes derogatory remarks about Mr Thompson and his late father, Eddie Thompson, who also chaired the Tannadice club until his death from cancer in 2008.

Mr Thompson declined to comment when approached by The Courier. However, it is understood police have been in contact with him.

The Twitter comments were being discussed by United fans on a supporters’ website over the weekend.

One described them as ”vile” and another said they were ”absolutely shocking and disgusting.”

Another fan wrote: ”Does he not understand the laws regarding sectarian bile on the internet?”

A fourth contributor added: ”I trust the appropriate police authorities can trace (him).”

Earlier this month United striker Johnny Russell was the victim of vile abuse on Twitter after he scored one of the goals that knocked Rangers out of the cup.
