Online retailer Amazon has withdrawn a “zombie Jimmy Savile” costume from sale after receiving heavy criticism from children’s charities.
Amazon, which has a major distribution centre in Dunfermline, sent out an email to customers advertising the costume last week.
It described the £14.99 outfit as “perfect for bad taste parties, Halloween and zombie Jimmy Savile fancy dress”.
The full costume included a blue and white tracksuit, a fake cigar, silver wig, white face paint and a medallion.
Peter Saunders from the National Association of People Abused in Childhood described the costume as “tasteless, senseless and extremely insensitive.”
“Nobody wants to remember Savile’s horrible face, particularly his many victims,” he said.
Retailers have withdrawn a number of Halloween costumes from sale this year following complaints they were in poor taste.
Two major supermarkets were forced to withdraw costumes that critics claimed stigmatised people with mental health problems.
Asda pulled its “mental patient fancy dress costume” from shelves and Tesco later withdrew its “psycho ward” outfit after receiving complaints the outfits were offensive.
Both stores apologised and agreed to make donations to the mental health charity Mind.
Tesco was also forced to apologise for selling an inflatable “gay best friend” on its website.
