James Gandolfini’s son will play a young Tony Soprano in the upcoming Sopranos sequel.
James, who died aged 51 in 2013, is revered for his portrayal of the New Jersey mob boss in HBO’s mafia drama.
A prequel film titled The Many Saints Of Newark is in development and it has now been announced Michael Gandolofini will play the role of Tony.
Sopranos creator David Chase is at the helm of the upcoming project which will also star Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga and Jon Bernthal.
Michael, 19, said: “It’s a profound honour to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano.
“I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints Of Newark.”
It is understood filmmakers carried out an extensive audition process while casting the role of young Tony and landed on Michael due to his resemblance to his father and understanding of the character.
Michael is best known for his breakout role on HBO’s The Deuce. The Many Saints Of Newark is set during the Newark race riots of the 1960s and focuses on Dickie Moltisanti as he mentors Tony.
It is expected there will be a crossover with The Sopranos.
Earlier this month, The Sopranos celebrated its 20th anniversary. It is widely considered one of the greatest television dramas ever and ran for six seasons from 1999-2007.
