Geologist Professor Iain Stewart was this week named president of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
Known for his television work including BBC series Making Scotland’s Landscape, Men of Rock and How to Grow a Planet, Prof Stewart was confirmed in the position at the RSGS agm in Edinburgh.
He takes over from the Earl of Lindsay as the 28th president of the Perth-based RSGS, in a line stretching back to 1885.
As he stepped aside, the Earl of Lindsay praised the new RSGS headquarters in the Fair Maid’s House.
He said: ”We now have a beautiful and functional building to promote geography to the people of Scotland and a fabulous resource for research and for storing our valuable collections.”
Iain Stewart is professor of geoscience communication at Plymouth Universty, where his research interests include natural disasters, with a particular focus on past major earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions in the Mediterranean regions.
He said: ”I look forward to helping to continually develop upon the society’s aims to promote an understanding of the natural environment and human societies.”
