McNamara’s bravery rewarded

It's been a good week for Jackie McNamara.
It's been a good week for Jackie McNamara.

What a difference a week makes.

Last Saturday, all those of a Tangerine persuasion were left bitterly disappointed when Dundee United tamely slumped to defeat against Inverness in the Highlands.

Fast forward to last Wednesday night and manager Jackie McNamara decided to ring the changes in the League Cup quarter-final against Hibs, giving the likes of Aidan Connolly, Blair Spittal and John Souttar the chance to bring their youthful exuberance to the table.

The United boss shook things up again on Saturday against St Mirren, making six changes in all and it paid off once again Charlie Telfer, among others, rewarding his gaffer with an assured performance capped with a well-taken goal.

All of which means that there is genuine competition for places at the club and no-one can afford to rest on their laurels.

McNamara deserves enormous credit for the bravery of his selections, especially in the quarter-final tie at Easter Road.

Speaking on Friday, the manager insisted: “We want to be entertained. To see them play without fear.”

So, a week that began with bitter disappointment has ended with United in the semis of the League Cup and sitting proudly atop the Premiership.

Now, for United fans, surely that’s entertainment?
