On Sunday December 28 1879, during a violent winter storm, the train to Dundee was crossing over the River Tay when a huge section of the bridge collapsed, taking with it 59 souls. It was a disaster beyond anybody’s imagination.
Despite having driven past The Old Manor Hotel, Lundin Links, many times over the years, I had never eaten there. I confess to having been a little put off by the modern banqueting suite, partly obscuring the roadside view of the traditional gray stone manor house, and the signage referencing the hotel’s wedding and conference trade.
Of all the dubious causes raising hackles over the hot Easter holiday, perhaps the climate protesters, mainly in London but also popping up in Edinburgh, were the least obviously obnoxious.
