Raith Rovers’ Mark Campbell has capped his remarkable comeback from a career-threatening car crash by being named the Irn-Bru Phenomenal First Division Player of the Month for December.

The popular “Sparky” has been in outstanding form for Rovers since making his first start for the side since that serious accident last February.

He was drafted in on Boxing Day against Patrick Thistle, and has since starred at the heart of Raith’s defence against Falkirk and Dunfermline, even chipping in with a priceless goal against the Pars.

“I have had my fair share of success and injuries at other clubs but I do not normally get a lot of publicity,” said Campbell.

“That has changed in the past year because of the accident and this award is a great way to end that chapter on a high note.

“I do not mind saying that football took second place for a while and that my outlook on life has changed. I am much more forward looking now than I was before.

“Hopefully, 2011 will see Raith continue to fight it out at the top of the table.

“It started well with the win over Dunfermline but there are a lot of hard games to come.

“There is a lot to play for and I am delighted to be involved.”

Campbell’s manager John McGlynn said, “Everyone at the club is delighted Mark has picked up this award.

“He’s worked extremely hard to get back in the side after what was a traumatic accident.

“It is to his great credit that not only has he managed to return to this level of football but also play three high-intensity games in a week.

“It is a massive compliment to the character of the man.”
