Dundee United assistant boss Gary Kirk believes there will be no need for stirring speeches in the dressing-room before Wednesday night’s game at Motherwell.
That’s because his players possess a steely determination to make amends for last week’s Scottish Cup exit at the same venue and to continue their SPL winning streak, which they extended to six matches with Saturday’s stunning 3-2 victory against Rangers at Ibrox.
Kirk said, “We have not done well at Fir Park this season and the boys want to rectify that.
“They want to go back there and put on a performance.
“I don’t think we will have to give much of a team talk before the game.”
He added, “I have never been to Ibrox before and seen an away team have so much of the ball. They really were excellent.
“The boys were all hurting on Thursday and Friday after what happened against Motherwell.”
United’s three goals on Saturday were all out of the top drawer, but Kirk made special mention of the sensational header by Johnny Russell which drew the sides level at 2-2.
The striker picked up the SPL young player of the month award last week and showed exactly why he was worthy of it with his powerful finish in Glasgow.
“Johnny Russell has a superb header on him,” Kirk added. “He’s just a wee lad but he has some spring on him.
“The header he had against Rangers was unbelievable. Danny Swanson was a few yards away and if it had hit him, I think it might have killed him.”
He added, “People underestimate Johnny in the air. He’s coming along really well and we are thrilled with the progress he’s making.”
