East Fife 1 Annan 1: Naysmith says draw was fair result

Caolan McAleer put East Fife ahead.
Caolan McAleer put East Fife ahead.

Gary Naysmithconceded that his side hadn’t been worth any more than the point they picked up at home to Annan.

Home form has become a cause for concern around Bayview, with the Methil men struggling to string a run of results together on their own patch.

Naysmith’s men actually looked on course to get the three points after going in at the break a goal up thanks to Caolan McAleer’s effort.

Peter Weatherson levelled things up in the second half, however, with the visitors looking more likely to go on and secure the win.

The draw meant East Fife picked up just one point from their home double header against Clyde and Annan following last week’s 1-0 defeat to Barry Ferguson’s men.

Naysmith said: “Annan started the better team and we scored completely against the run of play.

“Playing at home to Annan, I expected to beat them and that’s no disrespect but, for the way we played, it’s a point gained.

“I think Annan were very unfortunate as well not to get a penalty. I thought the lads looked really nervy and we were holding on a bit.

“We need to do better as a team and I’ve told the players that.”

The Fifers started off on the front foot and took an early lead when Ross Campbell picked out McAleer on the edge of the box.

The former Airdrie winger picked his spot and curled a fine effort into the top corner.

It was almost 2-0 to the Fifers when McAleer again found space on the edge of the Annan box and fired in a shot that struck the post.

Campbell was guilty of passing up another great chance for Naysmith’s men when he fired wildly over from eight yards with the goal at his mercy.

East Fife failed to see the game off by adding a killer second and they were made to pay when Annan pulled themselves level.

The home side failed to defend a throw in properly and Peter Weatherson collected a loose ball, turned and fired past Allan Fleming.
