Brechin City 1 Airdrie 1: McKinnon rues failure to hold on to lead

Bobby Barr put Brechin into the lead.

Brechin City manager Ray McKinnon expressed disappointment that his men had not been able to hold on to the 1-0 advantage they held over Airdrie as the clock ticked down at Glebe Park on Saturday.

McKinnon said: “We took the lead then let them back into it. It wasn’t a great game, with not much good football.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t manage to see the game out, and we can play a lot better.

“I think 1-1 was a fair result, but I’m disappointed we didn’t claim three points.

“When we took the lead, we needed to work hard and press the ball, but instead we sat off it a bit.”

Brechin had a let-off in seven minutes when Jim Lister headed home a Kieghan Parker lob, but he was rightly given offside.

On 16 minutes a Parker shot was well saved by Graeme Smith.

In an uninspiring first half, Kyle McAusland went close for Brechin on 26 minutes when he exchanged passes with Jamie Masson and his shot was blocked.

On the stroke of half-time, Masson made space on the edge of the box but shot over.

Brechin tried to take control at the start of the second half and McAusland had a shot saved, then Masson drove over from 25 yards.

On 71 minutes a Nathan Blockley drive was tipped over by Smith.

Back came Brechin and on 77 minutes a curling 22-yard free-kick from Masson was tipped over by Andy McNeil. Two minutes later Masson tried his luck again with another free-kick from slightly further out and McNeil pulled off an even better save.

Brechin took the lead on 81 minutes. A punt upfield was headed past his own goalkeeper by Luca Gasparrotto, and Bobby Barr thumped the ball into the empty net.

Airdrie levelled three minutes later. Patrick Boyle crossed from the left and Lister seemed to get a touch as Smith scrambled to try to keep the ball out.

Airdrie went closest to grabbing a winner two minutes into added time when substitute Bryan Prunty sent in a head-flick which dipped inches over the bar.
