Now though, 21-year-old midfielder Ferguson, who made 27 appearances and scored two goals for Brechin last season, has signed a deal with the club after training with the squad on Saturday.
Steeves, who was on loan at Montrose from Forfar last season, has also formally signed up for another stint at Links Park.
Hegarty said: “I am delighted to get both of the players on board.
“Ryan is someone I know well from my time coaching at United and I am sure he will impress with Montrose.
“Andrew has been coaching in Canada since the end of the season but he is back now and it is great that he has decided to return to Montrose.
“We are actively seeking further reinforcements and hopefully there will be further news on that front soon.”
