Cowdenbeath 3 Dumbarton 2: Robertson back with a bang

Jon Robertson made a winning return at Cowdenbeath.
Jon Robertson made a winning return at Cowdenbeath.

A dramatic finish saw Cowdenbeath pick up their first Championship success of the season and former skipper Jon Robertson feels that the talent is there at Central Park to make a real impact on the division.

Robertson joined Cowden for the second time on Thursday and scored one of the goals which ended a run of three straight league defeats and lifted the club off the foot of the table with a fine win over the Sons.

Jamie Stevenson fired Cowdenbeath ahead in 20 minutes and the hosts had chances to put the game to bed before the break, but two rocket 20-yarders from Chris Turner had Dumbarton ahead with just 26 minutes left.

Robertson cleverly chipped keeper Jamie Ewings from just inside the box after breaking through the middle of the Dumbarton defence with just under 20 minutes to go then, in the last minute, Jordan Morton was pulled down in the box only to see his spot-kick saved by Ewings.

In the second minute of time added Kane Hemmings fired in the winner from 16 yards.

The man who captained the Blue Brazil to the Second Division title two seasons ago is delighted to be back at Central Park.

“It all happened so quickly at the end of the week,” said Robertson. “I had been selected to play against Kilmarnock for St Mirren but had to pull out at the last second when an injury flared up.

“Saints boss Danny Lennon told me he was unhappy at my late withdrawal and then a couple of days later told me Cowdenbeath were wanting me back.

“I was happy to take up the offer and to score a goal in my first game back was the icing on the cake.”

“Boss Colin Cameron has brought in some really talented players like Grant Adam, Kane Hemmings, Jordan Morton and Andy Russell, and I feel we can give sides in the Championship a real run for their money and climb the table.”

Cameron was delighted with the win and the performance of his latest signing.

“I was really pleased to get the chance to get Robbo back in the squad because he is a player who is never out of a game.

“It was a much-needed win but we need to build on it after the international break.”
