Veteran Morton striker Peter Weatherson admitted Cowdenbeath’s late charge took the shine off his team’s win.
Weatherson scored twice in the first half at Central Park on Saturday as the Cowden defence struggled and played his part in the second-half show from the Cappielow side, which saw them go 4-1 ahead.
However, the Fifers posed them real problems in the closing stages.
John Armstrong’s headed goal on the stroke of half-time gave the Cowden faithful hope but goals from Archie Campbell and David O’Brien put Morton out of sight early in the second period.
Strikes in the closing minutes from sub Mark Ramsay and Jamie Stevenson put a better complexion on the result for the Blue Brazil.
Weatherson said: ”It was great to be in the team and bagging a double and I felt for the first 75 minutes we were well in control. But credit to Cowdenbeath they came back at us and grabbed these two goals, which took the shine off the result.
”No disrespect to them, but if we are to be serious about being in the promotion race, you have to beat the likes of Cowden and that was what we did.”
Cowdenbeath player/manager Colin Cameron said his side had gone back to the defending of the opening day of the season against Dunfermline.
”We made too many simple mistakes and gave away three very avoidable goals.” he said. ”We have a difficult few games coming up so we need to improve and quickly.”
