Dundee United reject Championship side’s bid for Johnny Russell

The race to sign Johnny Russell is hotting up, with Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson turning down the first official bid of the summer.

The club is in the English Championship and another from the same division has also made contact, but hasn’t yet lodged a bid for the striker.

Thompson reported: “Two clubs have been in touch, and I’ve turned down a bid from one of them. I don’t want to say who they are, because they have behaved impeccably.”

Russell said earlier this month that he would like to play in Europe should United agree to his sale this summer.

Serie A club Catania have had three bids for the former Scotland Under-21 international turned down, while Championship outfit Huddersfield Town had a £1.25m double offer for Russell and winger Gary Mackay-Steven rejected by United 10 months ago.

Sheffield United expressed an interest late in the January transfer window.

Thompson pointed out that nobody has spoken to him regarding Mackay-Steven.

He also insisted there has been “some mischief making down south” as far as young stars John Souttar and Ryan Gauld are concerned.

He added that any offer for one of the teenagers would have to be “significant” to be entertained.

Meanwhile, Thompson still hasn’t heard from Willo Flood and Barry Douglas about their intentions for next season.

As far as Flood is concerned, he said: “He’s not shown a great willingness to sign. I think he wants to stay, but only on his terms.

“He would have to take a cut but he would still be the equal highest paid player at the club.”

Rangers last night confirmed the signing of United striker Jon Daly.

The Irishman will sign a two-year contract for the Third Division champions on September 1, when their transfer embargo expires.

Daly, who had confirmed his intention to sign for Rangers on Sunday, follows Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cammy Bell and Motherwell midfielder Nicky Law in joining the Ibrox side this week.
