Dundee United 1 St Johnstone 1: Lomas dedicates point to ‘terrific’ fans

St Johnstones Liam Craig clashes with Keith Watson as the Saints recover from their Pittodrie off-day to claim a point at Tannadice.

ST JOHNSTONE’S Tayside derby point at Tannadice was payback to their fans for defeat at Aberdeen on Saturday, according to Perth boss Steve Lomas.

The visitors recovered from the loss of a second-minute Gavin Gunning goal to earn a draw against Dundee United through a Brian McLean own-goal at the start of the second half.

Lomas felt the draw was the least his players deserved, after bouncing back from a Pittodrie off-day in impressive fashion.

He explained: “We asked for a reaction because the performance at Aberdeen wasn’t great, and we brought around 1,000 fans to the game today who were terrific.

“The players knew they owed the supporters a performance, and they got that in abundance. That was for them, and the plucky souls who went up to Aberdeen in the wind and the rain.”

Gregory Tade was one-on-one with United keeper Radoslaw Cierzniak in the dying moments, but the Pole emerged the victor.

“If Gregory had showed a bit more composure at the end the win would have been ours,” Lomas said.

“Our conversion rate is probably the poorest in the league and that’s what’s causing us to draw too many games.

“Their keeper made some super saves and had it not been for that and, had we been a bit more clinical in our finishing, we’d have been going down the road with three points.”

The Northern Irishman added: “The other plus is we went down early but responded. You either go under or you fight back. We did the latter.

“Once we got a foothold in the game we got stronger and I thought we were the more progressive side in the second half.

“We just couldn’t get the winner that the second-half performance probably deserved.”
