Cowdenbeath’s successful pre-season continued with a second consecutive away win, giving manager Jimmy Nicholl a happy return to Northern Ireland with a victory over Linfield at Bangor on Saturday.

The Fifers, who had beaten Blyth Spartans 4-1 in Northumberland seven days earlier, turned in another impressive display to come out on top.

The match was settled by a first-half own goal from Niall Quinn following good play from Lewis Milne.

The Beath boss, who won 73 caps for Northern Ireland, is looking to his squad to continue their progress when they meet St Mirren in a friendly at Central Park on Tuesday, with a 7.45pm kick off.

The Buddies are bringing a strong side and Nicholl said: “Going away with the players has been a very worthwhile exercise.

“Now we are looking to kick on at home against St Mirren before our opening cup match against Brechin City on Saturday.”

With Tuesday night’s game being Cowden’s only home pre-season fixture, the club are hopeful of a good attendance.

The Fifers chief executive Alex Anderson said: “We are delighted that St Mirren are bringing their first team, which means this will be a major test.

“This is our first home friendly and it is an attractive game before the season gets under way.”
