Raith Rovers’ Rory McKeown hoping for return to winning ways in the cup

If Raith are to progress into the next round of the William Hill Scottish Cup, they will have to do what no other side has done this season beat Elgin City at Borough Briggs.

Despite that fine record, the Championship side will start firm favourites against Jim Weir’s League Two part-timers outfit however, Rovers’ defender Rory McKeown admits he will be taking nothing for granted this afternoon.

He said: “I didn’t know that (unbeaten record) but it’s the cup and anything can happen.

“Recently I watched that Salford City against Notts County FA cup tie which shows if one team doesn’t turn up, you go out of the cup, it is as simple as that.

“We are the bigger team but there shouldn’t be any pressure on them.

“The pressure is on us and we have to perform.

“We are the full-time team but they have a good home record and will have their fans behind them so we have to deal with that and win.”

He added: “My record’s not bad in the cup.

“Last year we had the big game against Rangers, it went well for us and then we went to Inverness and probably didn’t perform as well as we should have.

“That was a missed chance to go on a wee cup run but they went on to win it in the end so we can’t really say too much.

“So it would be nice to get a wee cup run going this year.

“Our league form probably hasn’t been the best recently.

“So a cup run would bring a lot of confidence around the club and the team.”

Raith are even more determined to do well against Elgin after drawing their last two league games against Dumbarton last Saturday and St Mirren in midweek, shipping last-gasp goals when it looked like they were in a winning position.

McKeown said: “I suppose if you are going to draw a game of football, then it is probably the worst way to do it through losing last-minute goals.

“Against St Mirren when they pegged us back, you just thought, ‘Oh, no’.

“Then two minutes later the final whistle goes and it is a hard one to take.

“The Dumbarton game . . . the less said about that the better.

“Being three up and losing three goals in eight minutes it is not good enough and we know that ourselves.

“So we will go out on Saturday and hopefully get back to winning ways.

“It is definitely what we are looking for, for sure.”
