Raith Rovers’ Kyle Benedictus driven daft trying to pass test

Raith Rovers’ Kyle Benedictus played in front of 44,000 people at Ibrox last week but he admits that sort of occasion is less nerve-racking than taking driving lessons.

The big centre-half is part of a car school that travels down from Dundee every day for training under boss Ray McKinnon in Glenrothes.

Benedictus shares a motor with team-mates Ryan McCord, Lewis Toshney, Craig Wighton and Jon Daly.

However, the former Dundee defender has yet to pass his driving test and he admits the lads in the car who do have a licence, are not exactly rushing forward to let him behind the wheel to give him some extra lessons.

Benedictus though is hoping he and the rest of the Raith players will be back in the driving seat against Queen of the South at Stark’s Park today after last week’s 5-0 thrashing from Rangers.

He said: “It does help having the Dundee lads here. I knew Ryan was signing before I spoke to the gaffer.

“Obviously I knew Tosh and Craig Wighton coming in on loan.

“Now we have Jon, who lives in Inchture so it is a full car we can’t have any more from Dundee!

“Ryan, big Jon and Tosh drive.

“Craig and I don’t have licences but we are in the process of trying to pass our tests.

“I have asked the three drivers if they would take me out in their cars to give me some extra tips but they do not trust me with their motors.

“I have been doing my theory but I have had to cancel it a couple of times.

“It is difficult to get a time slot because of my training commitments.

“I am ready to sit the practical test, I just need to get the theory out of the way.

“The last exams I sat were my standard grades and I don’t want a repeat of that!

“I am not too confident of passing my theory so thank goodness for football.

“To me, driving lessons make me more nervous than any football match but I will get there in the end.

“Hopefully, I can take a turn driving the lads to training eventually.”

Benedictus admitted that what happened at Ibrox last week is now firmly in the past and the Raith players are just looking to continue their unbeaten home run against Queens.

He added: “We knew how difficult it would be when we went there and I actually thought we started well.

“But it is over and done with now and these are the important games for where we want to be this year.

“Your home form is everything. If we can win those games, then it gives you a big platform and then you can try to pick up points away from home.

“We have won every game at Stark’s Park so far this season.

“Saturday is no different, we have to be positive and believe we can take all three points.

“We have a really tough couple of weeks coming up.

“The boys are confident, though. Last Saturday is out the window now.

“Spirits have been high once again this week in training and hopefully we can get back to winning ways against Queen of the South.”

Raith will be without the injured Lewis Vaughan, Ross Callachan and Craig Barr but Wighton returns from Scotland Under-19 duty.

Meanwhile, Raith centre-half David Bates has joined Brechin City on loan until December 12.
