Dunfermline 1 Morton 2: Late goals ‘a bad one to take’ for Pars

Faissal El Bakhtaoui scores to give Dunfermline the lead.

Ryan Scully has urged his team to start finishing off their rivals after watching Morton score twice in the final 10 minutes.

The Pars were unbeaten in the league at East End Park this season going into the clash with Jim Duffy’s men but passed up on moving to the top of the table, despite scoring first.

The goalkeeper said: “Today was a really bad one to take. All the results went our way and if he had won we would have gone top.

“It was two soft goals we gave away but I think we need to be looking at killing teams off when we are on top.

“Teams are always going to have a wee period where they will have chances against us.

“We cannot expect to keep getting clean sheets and we need to take our chances. Today was a huge blow and it was really disappointing.”

Jim Jefferies’ men were well on top for most of the match and took the lead through Faissal El Bakhtaoui’s third goal in four games.

Morton failed to clear Michael Moffat’s cross and when the ball broke to 21-year-old Bakhtaoui, he swept the ball home from six yards.

That only served to spark the visitors into life though with Scully doing well to deny Sean Crighton before Stefan Milojevic blasted wide from 25 yards.

Scully again had to be at his best moments later when he diverted Declan McManus’ low shot round the post.

But the goalkeeper was finally beaten with just under 10 minutes left.

Joe McKee’s corner was met by Thomas O’Ware and he bulleted his header home from eight yards.

It was the first league goal Scully had conceded at home for 543 minutes but that was little comfort.

He said: “It was always going to happen we were never stupid enough to think we were going to go through the whole season keeping clean sheets at home.

“That is when killing teams off obviously helps as well but I was never really thinking about the clean sheet record, just getting three points.

“With results going our way, we could have been top of the league.”

Worse was to follow though as Derek Gaston denied Andy Geggan as the game entered stoppage time before McManus fired home from inside the box to secure a stunning comeback.

Scully said: “Obviously, the closer the game gets to the finish we are going to sit back.

“Morton are going to have a wee spell as well but we are really disappointed to concede the two goals.”

Jefferies was frustrated to see his side drop three points.

He said: “That’s football isn’t it?

“There is no doubt the momentum changed when they got the first goal.”
