East Fife will play League Two football next season after they were relegated by Stirling Albion at Bayview.
The Methil side went into the play-off second leg with a 2-1 advantage following their win on Wednesday but that was overturned by goals from Jordan White and Sandy Cunningham.
Bayview boss Gary Naysmith said he felt his side had been outbattled.
He said: “I think if you look at things they just seemed to want it more. In terms of personal battles they maybe won nine or 10 out there.
“I warned the players before the game about complacency after our win during the week. The damage has been done now.
“The fans were brilliant today, as they have been all season, and I’m so disappointed for them and the chairman.”
Stirling started the game on the front foot as they looked to quickly restore parity in the tie.
The Fifers were content to try to hit on the break with Nathan Austin and Kevin Smith almost able to get in behind the Stirling defence.
Phil Johnston almost gave Stirling the lead when his cross deceived Dylan Rooney and dropped just wide.
Craig Comrie was the next to try his luck when he sent a drive from just outside the box goalwards.
Rooney, though, was equal to it.
With so much at stake for both sides the game became a nervy affair with neither team pushing too far forward to risk leaving gaps at the back.
The best of what was created fell the way of Stirling but they struggled to find a way past Rooney.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first and Steven Campbell had to look lively to cut out a dangerous David Weatherston cross.
The Binos didn’t have it all their own way, though, and Austin was unlucky not to break the deadlock when his strike from 12 yards was blocked.
Graham Weir should have pulled Stirling level in the tie 20 minutes into the second half when the Fifers were unable to clear their lines and the ball fell kindly inside the box.
The striker couldn’t control his lob, though, and the chance was wasted.
But it wasn’t long before the first goal of the game did come. White got in behind the East Fife back four and sent his effort high into the net from close range.
The Fifers failed to pose any real threat in attack and were punished when the visitors went 2-0 up.
Cunningham this time got in behind the defence and like White sent his strike high past Rooney.
