Albion 2 Cowdenbeath 1: Defensive weakness comes back to haunt Cowden

Cowdenbeath’s defensive frailties cost them at least a point at Coatbridge as a winning position was turned into a 2-1 defeat from Albion Rovers.

The Fifers netted early in the second half through Greig Spence.

However, goals from Scott McBride and Josh Mullin sent the hosts back into third place.

The first half was played at a subdued pace but there were chances, with home goalkeeper Ross Stewart almost gifting a goal in the opening exchanges.

The shot-stopper hit a clearance off the in-rushing Spence, but recovered his composure to clear the loose ball.

The hosts should have taken the lead on 11 minutes when a right- wing cross from Mullin picked out Ally Love in acres of space 10 yards out, but he side-footed wide of goal.

The Blue Brazil, who lost 7-0 to Peterhead on Saturday, responded with a Declan Hughes shot that Stewart tipped over.

On 25 minutes Kyle Miller carved open the home defence with a through ball to Spence, who shot over the bar.

Miller had the next effort, which flashed across the face of the home goal before bouncing to safety.

The second half was brought to life with just 36 seconds gone when Andy Murdoch clipped a fine pass over the head of Ricardo Talu that Spence controlled on his chest before stabbing past Stewart from eight yards.

Rovers hit back on 50 minutes when Mark Ferry knocked a headed clearance into the path of McBride and the former Blue Brazilian had time to turn and hit home a low shot.

The winner came 16 minutes later when Colin Nish’s side appeared to lose their concentration after the double substitution that saw Liam Callaghan and Craig Johnston come on and both Miller and Murdoch go off.

Rovers took full advantage as Cowdenbeath adjusted. Callum McRobbie chipped a pass from the 18-yard line to the back post for an unmarked Mullin to pick his spot behind Jamie Sneddon with a deft header.

Cowdenbeath debutant Fraser Kerr sent an effort wide from 12 yards, while Kenny Adamson’s late hooked effort dropped over.
