Ayr v Arbroath: Lichties gaffer fed up talking about wins

Arbroath boss Paul Sheerin admits he is fed up to the back teeth talking about “back-to-back” wins, writes Neil Robertson.

The Red Lichties have failed to achieve that feat so far this season but have another opportunity to do so at Ayr after beating Airdrie 3-2 at Gayfield last week.

That victory was achieved thanks to a last-gasp Lee Erwin penalty, the on-loan Motherwell striker’s sixth goal in as many games for the Angus side.

Now, Sheerin’s men will travel to Ayrshire knowing they have the opportunity to leapfrog the Honest Men in the league table as well as secure that elusive consecutive sequence of victories.

The manager said: “I felt we were well worth our win last week.

“I thought some of our play was out of the top drawer and the boys deserve a lot of credit for keeping going right to the final whistle.

“To be honest, we have had to do that too often this season, playing catch-up and it would be nice to reach the end of a game in a comfortable position, certainly as far as this manager is concerned.

“We now have a good opportunity to move further up the table depending on results elsewhere.

“I would say it is another chance to secure back-to-back wins for the first time this season but to be honest, I am fed up talking about that.

“Even a point at Somerset Park would be a good result and would steady the ship a bit.

“We never drew in the first quarter and we have to start turning some of our losses into points in the second quarter.”

Arbroath will be without the injured Ricky Little, Connor Birse and Graham Bayne.
