Montrose v Queen’s Park: Top of league sounds great to Stuart Garden

Montrose manager Stuart Garden likes the sound of being league toppers.

Top of the league Montrose would have a nice ring to it for manager Stuart Garden.

The Links Park men have the chance to reach the summit of League Two if they beat Queen’s Park.

It would be a first for boss Stuart Garden and his players and he is not trying to hide the fact that it is their goal against the winless and bottom-of-the-table Glasgow club.

He said: “If things go our way we could be top. That’s the aim. That’s where we want to be. It’s certainly a lot better than worrying about being in the bottom two or three, as we have done in the past.”

At the start of the season when results were not going their way, Garden was adamant it was more due to bad luck than sub-standard performances. However, that has changed latterly.

He explained: “I can honestly say in all our games so far, the only one we didn’t deserve to win was against Stirling Albion the other week. We’ve had a consistency of standard this season I’ve been looking for.

“All that has changed is the breaks are going for us just now like the own goal at the weekend. And our confidence is up.”

There are no fresh injury concerns following the weekend win against East Stirling, with Gareth Rodger, Alan Campbell and Lloyd Young still out.

Queen’s came within two minutes of their first win of the season on Saturday against Albion Rovers and they head up to Angus determined to finally get off the mark.

Hampden head coach Gardner Speirs said: “Montrose have made a good start to the season and you can see the benefit continuity from last season has brought.

“They did well to beat East Stirling and will see this as a great opportunity to get another win. However, we know we are not far away from a success.

“We got a bit nervous in the closing stages at the weekend but we have discussed that with the players. We won at Links Park last season and it would be great to do so in this game.”

The Spiders are without the injured Grant Mosson and James Baty.
