Montrose manager wants players to copy Ross County’s example

Montrose manager Paul Hegarty has cited the example of Ross County as one to follow as the Angus team fights for survival in League Two.

Hegarty has told his players to look north to see how the Staggies, who appeared to be cast adrift at the bottom of the Premiership, have given themselves a fighting chance of staying up.

County looked down and out when they slumped to a 4-0 hammering from Aberdeen on February 7 but have since beaten Motherwell at home and then grabbed a brilliant away win against Partick Thistle last weekend.

Like the Dingwall team, the Gable Endies are looking to draw a line in the sand after a four-goal loss – in their case the defeat up at Elgin last Saturday – and they hope to start collecting the points today at Broadwood when they tackle Barry Ferguson’s Clyde team.

Hegarty said: “I have told the boys how we should be aiming to do what Ross County have done.

“They have managed to get two wins in a row and are now ahead of both St Mirren and Motherwell in the table.

“That shows what can be done in a short space of time.

“Our target is to catch East Stirling, who are two points ahead of us with two games in hand.

“The players know what they need to do to get us off the bottom and they are determined to make that happen.

“Now is the time to get the wins we require, although it will be a difficult game down at Clyde.

“We did OK for half-an-hour at Elgin but things go against you when you are down where we are and it’s up to us to bounce back.”

Montrose will be without the suspended Ewan Moyes, who was sent off against Elgin, while Jonathan Crawford, Bryan Deasley and Leighton McIntosh are all still injured.

On the plus side, Ross McCord has trained and will be available.
