Berwick Rangers 0 East Fife 3: Naysmith’s men firmly in driving seat

East Fife will look to put any lingering hopes that Annan may have of snatching fourth place firmly to bed on Saturday.

Gary Naysmith’s men put themselves firmly in the driving seat to be part of the promotion play-offs after seeing off Berwick at the weekend.

The 3-0 win, coupled with Annan’s 5-4 win at Elgin, means only Jim Chapman’s side have a mathematical chance of catching the Fifers.

Even then, that would require East Fife to be beaten at home to Elgin, Annan to see off Montrose at home and for a seven-goal swing to go against the Fifers.

Boss Naysmith said: “We’re sitting seven goals better off and that can happen in football I’ve seen stranger things.

“But obviously the odds are stacked highly in favour of us.

“We’ll be going into the game looking to win, not to draw or anything like that, to go into the play-offs with a bit of confidence and on the back of two wins.”

East Fife started the game well and were rewarded when they took the lead with a well worked goal.

Liam Smith found Fraser Mullen whose cross in turn picked out Kevin Smith. He beat his marker and fired a low shot past Andrews.

Allan Walker almost made it 2-0 before Berwick keeper Michael Andrews denied Nathan Austin.

Berwick’s Lee Currie then got himself needlessly sent off when he lashed out at Kevin Smith following a 50/50 challenge and then booted Scott Smith in the back of the knee.

The Fifers made the man advantage count when Jonathan Page headed home a loose ball and Kevin Smith added another to make it 3-0.
