East Fife 3 Montrose 0: Fifers within touching distance of taking title

East Fife need one win from their next three games to wrap up the League Two title, but boss Gary Naysmith is in no mood to hang around.

Saturday’s 3-0 win over Montrose put the title within touching distance.

While the likes of Clyde, Elgin and Annan were dropping points behind them, the Methil men retained a steel grip on their place at the top of League Two with win after win.

A place in League One can come as early as Saturday, when East Fife travel to Broadwood to face the Bully Wee.

“We’ll train the exact same this week. The tempo we’re training at, I’ve never trained like that in April, even at a full-time club,” Naysmith said.

The Methil men have become renowned in recent weeks for starting games at a ferocious pace.

And that was the way it worked out on Saturday, with Montrose blown away by three goals in an 11-minute spell.

Jonathan Page opened the scoring when he touched a goal-bound Jason Kerr effort beyond Jordan Millar.

The home side stayed on the front foot, and Paul Hegarty’s men were struggling to cope.

Next to net was Stevie Campbell in spectacular fashion. The visitors gifted a free-kick on the corner of their box and Campbell stepped up, sending a stunning direct effort straight into the top corner.

There was no let-up in the pressure and it was swiftly 3-0 when Nathan Austin picked up a Naysmith through ball, raced in on goal and made no mistake.

Paul Hegarty took centre-half Jamie Clarke off for Adam Harwood.

The move paid off, and Montrose restricted their hosts while not really offering much in an attacking themselves.

Montrose boss Hegarty said: “That was way off the mark.

“The players know that it’s not acceptable, and we’ve said that on numerous occasions over the past six weeks.

“That’s the roller coaster we’re on.

“We were well beaten by a team who are champions elect, and it was damage-limitation in the second half,” he added.
