St Johnstone eye loan move for David Goodwillie

David Goodwillie has returned to Blackburn after a loan spell at Dundee United.
David Goodwillie has returned to Blackburn after a loan spell at Dundee United.

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright has revealed that the club are trying to bring David Goodwillie in on loan.

The Blackburn Rovers striker has spent the last six months farmed out at the side where he first made his name, Dundee United.

The 24-year-old has netted six times for the Tangerines this season. However, Tannadice manager Jackie McNamara has decided against extending the player’s stay.

Goodwillie has now been heavily linked with another loan move to Aberdeen, with Oldham another side believed to be showing an interest.

The player’s representatives have also not ruled out a straight return to Blackburn but Wright has not given up hope that he can persuade the front man, who joined Rovers in 2011 in a move worth over £2 million, to pledge his future to Saints.

The manager said: “David is one we’ve enquired about so it will come down to whether we can get a deal that suits us, suits David and Blackburn.

“There are other clubs in for him, ones that have more financial clout than us, but in football terms there isn’t a better place to come than here.

“We’re doing OK in the league, we’re still in two cups although he’s cup tied and it’s a good place to come in and work.

“Coming to us is a good opportunity to help anyone’s career. But everyone is looking for strikers so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

“We are looking at a number of players, David is one of several on our minds. And we are one of several clubs interested.

“So it’s a waiting game. People can go over what we’re able to afford in terms of finances. But from a football perspective, I think we’re as good an option as anyone for a player wanting to play football and do well.”

Two players currently with St Johnstone have pledged their futures to the club with defenders Tam Scobbie and Brian Easton signing extended deals.

That news comes hot on the heels of last week’s contract business, with Gary McDonald and Scott Brown also agreeing to extend their stays and Wright admitting he wants as many of his squad tied up as soon as possible.
