Only the Open Championship and the Women’s British Open will remain in the BBC’s exclusive live golf portfolio next year.
The corporation has surrendered the rights to the Aberdeen Asset Scottish Open and the BMW PGA Championship to Sky Sports in the new European Tour TV deal.
Sky have retained the exclusive live rights to the next three Ryder Cups after this year’s event at Medinah while they will also show all four days of the two top domestic European Tour events exclusively live in 2013.
The BBC previously covered both the PGA and the Scottish in full but have shown only the weekend play at both events for the past two years and again this summer.
The satellite broadcaster also moved in on the BBC’s previously exclusive deal with the Masters last year, showing all four days’ play from Augusta.
The BBC will show highlights packages from both Wentworth and Castle Stuart, but the corporation’s exclusive coverage has been reduced to just eight days of golf in the year.
Making the announcement, European Tour chief executive George O’Grady said: ”We are delighted to announce this long-term agreement with both Sky and BBC Television, which guarantees the tour superb high-quality visibility for the next six years.
”Sky’s dedication and groundbreaking technology complements the performance of all our international members on the world stage, which currently sees three European tour members, all of whom are British, occupying the top three positions in the official world golf ranking.”
The BBC will retain what’s described as ”extensive highlights rights” to the Ryder Cups at Gleneagles in 2014, Hazeltine in 2016 and Golf National in Paris in 2018.
The corporation’s Radio 5 Live will also retain live and exclusive UK radio rights to the matches between Europe and the USA.
