Dundee Stars hit for five despite taking early lead in Belfast

Lou Dickensons early strike for Dundee Stars wasnt enough for Marc Lefebvres men as they went down 5-2 in Belfast.
Lou Dickensons early strike for Dundee Stars wasnt enough for Marc Lefebvres men as they went down 5-2 in Belfast.

Dundee Stars let slip an early lead as they crashed 5-2 away to Belfast Giants.

The result keeps Marc Lefebvre’s team in joint fifth place, only four points off second-placed Giants, who have a game in hand.

In front of a bumper 4,300 crowd, Lou Dickenson fired Stars ahead after 15 minutes with Jason Gray supplying the assist, but Mike Radja levelled 29 seconds later on the power play.

James Desmarais then put the home side ahead 11 minutes later and goals by Michael Forney after 38 minutes and Derrick Walser in the 51st ended the game as a contest.

Mikael Lidhammar, assisted by Bobby Chaumont and Craig Moore, pulled one back for Dundee after 57 minutes but Radja scored Giants’ fifth seconds later.

Stars visit Braehead Clan today (face-off 2pm) where their only previous game in the league resulted in a 6-4 defeat.

Meanwhile, Fife Flyers playcaller Danny Stewart urged his men to widen the gap between them and Edinburgh Capitals when the sides clash at Murrayfield today.

Flyers could be facing the Capitals at the right time as they have slipped to seven straight defeats.

Stewart said: “We’ve had chances to create some space between us and other clubs and we’ve failed to capitalise.

“We must make sure we step up and start taking these chances as we enter the second half of the season.

“Capitals have good goaltending and some really skilled forwards who can hurt you if you don’t do your job.”

Manchester Storm forward Devin Didiomete has been banned for four matches for a checking-to-the-head penalty in the home game with Flyers on Sunday.

Didiomete was also handed a one-match penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for an off-the-ice incident in the game.

One of the games he misses will be the trip to Fife on Saturday January 9.

In last night’s other game, league leaders Cardiff Devils were made to sweat before beating bottom side Manchester 3-2.
