Considering both sides were just out of contention for the promotion play-off spot, Dundee High Rugby and Selkirk put on a decent show for the match which brought down the curtain on their RBS National League campaigns.
It was close at half-time and just as close at the finish, but the bulk of the scoring came in the first half with play switching from end to end.
It was the backs who did the damage, Dundee centre Tim McKavanagh grabbing two first half tries while Selkirk centre Ross Nixon and wing Darren Clapperton had touchdowns with only home prop Stephen Longwell crashing the party with a try from a driving maul to register one for the forwards.
Bryce Hosie converted one for High and Rory Banks both of the Selkirk scores so the game was finely poised at 17-14 at the break but the final 40 minutes of the season was celebrated by only a Banks penalty for Selkirk and Hosie adding to his impressive points total for the season with a similar strike for the hosts.
So Dundee finish fourth in the table behind title winners Boroughmuir and four points behind second-placed Stewarts Melville who go into the promotion play-offs at the expense of Watsonians by one point.
“We played poorly today but won the game,” said head coach Colin Robertson.
“It was important that we finished the season with a win, even though we lacked accuracy and were turned over too often.
“We scored three great tries, two by man of the match Tim McKavanagh and a cracker from quality phase play from Stevie Longwell.
“We finished the season just below the promotion positions and we are striving to improve on this next year as we up our level towards the Premiership”.
The Dundee side ended up three points adrift of Watsonians but their record against the sides above them tells its own tale with no away wins against the top three.
