Edinburgh impressive as Treviso are swept aside

Man of the match: Sam Hidalgo-Clyne.
Man of the match: Sam Hidalgo-Clyne.

SAM Hidalgo-Clyne shrugged off his man-of-the-match award against Treviso and insisted it was teamwork that paved the way for one of Edinburgh’s most vital triumphs of the season.

The scrum-half boosted his chances of a Scotland start in the Calcutta Cup tussle with England this weekend with a brilliant display in Italy.

He could be joined in the Twickenham line-up this weekend by centre Matt Scott, who snatched a try double to make sure of the precious bonus point.

Hidalgo-Clyne said: “It is always nice to win these individual prizes, but this was all about the squad and getting that important win.

“We always expect a real fight when we go to Treviso, so to earn maximum points was fantastic.

“It is certainly a boost in our efforts to get into that top six.”

Home coach Umberto Casellato backed Edinburgh to complete their mission and claim a place in next season’s European Champions Cup.

He said: “They are a much improved team.

“With excellent players such as Hidalgo-Clyne and Scott, along with Dave Denton and Tim Visser, I would be surprised if they did not keep on climbing the table. We don’t often get dominated here like we did in this match.”

Edinburgh had burst into life midway through the half with two tries in as many minutes.

They broke the deadlock as skipper Mike Coman ploughed over at the end of a rolling maul.

Then straight from the restart, new Scotland cap Ben Toolis charged down a clearance.

The loose ball bounced perfectly for the alert and pacy Scott to gather it easily and cruise to the line. Hidalgo-Clyne banged over both conversions.

Treviso regrouped and launched a series of raids at the other end but all they could manage was an angled penalty by Jayden Hayward.

Hidalgo-Clyne instantly replied with a identical strike, keeping Edinburgh in control at the interval.

Edinburgh clicked back into gear on the hour-mark to set up a third try for Andries Strauss.

Treviso refused to buckle and winger Simone Ragusi galloped in for a solo score after ripping the ball from Visser’s grip.

However, Scott immediately completed his double to make sure of the bonus.
