An “eye-catching” filly swept to the top of the championship in the Highland Pony ring at the 2013 Tayside Foal Show.
From the centre of the ring, judge Jennifer Allan, of the Millfield Highland Pony Stud, Freuchie, praised the turnout of entries after awarding Hamish Cameron’s two-year-old filly Maggie May II of Turin Hill with the top accolade.
“She caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring,” explained Jennifer.
“She is a big upstanding filly, with very correct movement,” she added.
The filly, home-bred by Hamish at Westcot, Pitkennedy had previously stood reserve champion at the same show, held annually at Forfar Market, last year and was also first in her class more recently at the North-east Scotland Highland Pony Enthusiasts’ Show at Aberdeen’s Duthie Park.
The daughter of Turin of Kylemore was bred out of the mare Maydew of Turin Hill, which was bequeathed to Hamish by Elizabeth Compton.
This seven-year-old mare, which is one of nine Highland Ponies Hamish currently has, was sired by Kincardine Ben Macdhui.
A former Tayside champion herself, she similarly took the championship at the show in her two-year-old year, in 2008.
In the final line-up, recent Winter Fair champion Ulrika of Whitefield took the reserve title.
Owned and home-bred by Messrs GM Baird, this yearling filly has only been lightly shown, collecting first places this year at the breed show at Strathallan and at NESHPES at Duthie Park.
She was also reserve female champion at Perth.
Bred at the Baird’s Whitefield Stud, at Burrelton, Blairgowrie, the filly was sired by Oliver of Forglen, which they had on loan for the season.
She is the first foal which the Bairds have from Queencake of Whitefield.
In the Shetland ring, Stevie McKay went one better than his reserve overall placing at the show last year to collect the sash for the best of breed from Aberdeenshire judge Mrs H Wilson, of the Mingulay Stud, Alford.
His supreme champion for 2013 was the miniature two-year-old filly Alichbrae Lady Primrose.
Primrose’s win adds to the success of the Crieff-based stud, run by Stevie, his wife Jackie and their daughter Kirsty, after they recently scooped the miniature title at the Winter Fair.
The stud evolved around seven years ago after Stevie, a director of a fencing company, worked on the Shetland Isles, on and off, for a number of years.
Primrose, which is sired by Merkisayre Dorvo, was home-bred out of the Clivocast Fireball daughter North Wells Candie.
She previously stood reserve miniature champion at the CSSPG Youngstock Show.
Bringing a final championship rosette home for 2013 to Braes of Kerryston Kerryston Naomi stood reserve Sheltand for Ken and Anne Scott, from Kellas, outside Broughty Ferry.
This black standard two-year-old filly, sired by Kerryson Kelly, was bred out of the Scott’s Dutch mare, Tineka v. Stepelo, which they imported around seven or eight years ago when she was a yearling.
Only lightly shown, this was Naomi’s breed championship win, although she previously won the reserve junior novice rosette at the Central Scotland Shetland Pony Group Summer Show.
