Dundee have been linked with a possible loan move for Sheffield United midfielder Stephen McGinn.

The 26-year-old began his career in Scotland with St Mirren as a youth before signing for Watford in 2010, and subsequently moved on to join the Blades three years later.

United boss Nigel Clough, who saw bids for Dundee United attacker Gary Mackay-Steven knocked back last week, has reportedly told McGinn that he could find it beneficial to go out on loan in January to “play some games”.

And reports yesterday suggested that Dundee are one of several possible suitors interested in bringing the former Buddies star back north of the border, although United have stressed that no “concrete approaches” have been made by any club.

Clough has confirmed that he would be open to the player leaving Bramall Lane to get some much-needed game time under his belt, but he appears to have ruled out a permanent move.

“We would never stand in the way of anyone who felt that would help,” Clough said of the possibility of players going out on loan.

“Providing it suited us all.”

McGinn hasn’t made an appearance for the Blades since the start of November, although he is expected to be included in Clough’s squad for tonight’s Capital One Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur.
