Raith Rovers earned their spot in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals after a Christian Nade goal 15 minutes from time saw them beat Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox.
The Kirkcaldy club famously defeated the Glasgow giants in last season’s Ramsdens Cup final, and there was to be more cup misery for the Gers as Grant Murray’s side repeated the feat at the fifth round stage of this term’s Scottish.
Much of the pre-match talk was about the home side’s five new loanees from Newcastle, although only two started namely Remie Streete and Haris Vuckic.
The hosts’ best chance of the first half fell to Jon Daly, who headed a Ricky Foster cross straight at Raith keeper David McGurn from point blank range in 25 minutes.
Rovers were unfortunate themselves not to break the deadlock two minutes later when Paul Watson saw his header deflected on to the post by Foster, with the ball rebounding back into the arms of the grateful Rangers keeper Steve Simonsen.
Streete’s debut then came to an abrupt end shortly before the break when he picked up a knock and had to be replaced by Darren McGregor.
The visitors grabbed the lead nine minutes after the restart after Kyle Hutton needlessly clipped Ross Callachan at the edge of the box.
Ryan Conroy stepped up to take the resulting free-kick and he curled the ball beyond the outstretched Simonsen.
The lead lasted just nine minutes though as Hutton set up Vuckic to give the Newcastle player a debut goal and level things up.
With the game on a knife-edge, Rovers seized the advantage once more in 75 minutes when sub Mark Stewart forced a fumble from Simonsen and Nade was on hand to prod the ball over the line.
