Baxter Park green message Celebration

A green message in a green space that was the theme of the Celebration in the Park that attracted thousands of visitors to Baxter Park on Saturday.

The annual event, designed to bring the Stobswell community together and raise money for good causes, proved as popular as ever. The park was busy all afternoon.

The environment was high on the agenda, with helpers giving people tips on recycling, energy efficiency and solar power.

For the young ones, there were even bikes hooked up to a slot-car track so pedal power could be converted to electricity.

If any children still had energy to burn they could enjoy the carnival rides and bouncy castles set up in the park amid a host of stalls.

Among the organisations raising awareness of their activities and money were the Friends of Baxter Park. A spokeswoman was pleased by the turnout and said the day had gone well.

Trinity Parish Church, Ninewells Palliative Care and Tayside Cancer Centre had stalls, along with Tayside Carers Support and the Dundee Partnership’s youth van.

Visitors also enjoyed music, arts and craft displays-including a live woodturning demonstration and food stalls.

The Dundee Museum of Transport brought along several rarities, including a vintage Rolls Royce and a horse-drawn ambulance.

Members hope to acquire the ex-Scottish Water premises near the park for their vehicle collection.

Committee member Jimmy McDonell said it was a chance to let local people know about their plans and said the group has a meeting arranged with Scottish Water this week to discuss matters. Business people have joined the committee.

Also drawing the crowds was a Tayside Fire and Rescue fire engine.
