Dundonians to be offered training in krav maga art of self defence

Dundonians are to be offered classes in self-defence techniques used by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF).

Nicola Ruggin (32), who moved to Dundee with his wife Stefania Pomaro (26), from Padova in northern Italy, learned krav maga while in Venice.

He studied under a master there and Israeli instructors nearer home, and has brought it to Dundee for what is believed to be the first time.

Stefania has a law degree and wanted to move to Scotland to study Scots law.

Nicola, a qualified fitness instructor and martial arts trainer, has secured a space at Energy Fitness club in Main Street and starts his first class there tonight.

“Krav Maga is used by the Israeli special forces,” he said. “It’s not a martial art. It’s purely self-defence and it’s also taught to the Italian marines.

“It teaches people how to disarm someone with a knife and it’s for both male and female people of all ages.

“It’s very easy to learn and very effective. It’s very useful for example if someone was out jogging and they were confronted by someone.

“It teaches you how to train the mind, first to deal with that situation and also then to train the body. You might be tired, but you have to defend yourself.

“The main aim is for someone to get home safely, that’s the most important thing.”

Stefania said, “I don’t know if it’s the first time there has been these classes in Dundee, but there are classes in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.”

Nicola and Stefania moved to Dundee in February, living on the northern outskirts, and have already fallen in love with the city.

“It’s a beautiful place, and it is cheaper to live here than in Glasgow or Edinburgh,” Stefania said.

“Where we live is only a few minutes drive into the town, but you don’t have to travel far to see beautiful countryside, castles or beaches.

“It’s maybe not well known for tourism, but Dundee is absolutely lovely, you can find everything here.”
