Aldi supermarket for Montrose approved

Aldi supermarket for Montrose approved

Montrose is in line for a retail and employment boost as a new supermarket has been approved for the town.

German giant Aldi has been given the nod to move on to the former Co-op site in Basin View, next to the train station.

The Co-op closed last year with the loss of 37 jobs.

Planners have been given permission to demolish the shell and build a new store around three quarters of the size of the original.

The new venture will restore 30 full-time posts, according to the firm.

Local councillor David May welcomed the news, saying the store will increase competitiveness among supermarkets, bring in jobs, and hopefully keep people in the town centre.

“This is very good news for the town as there’s been something missing there since the Co-op closed,” he said.

“At a time when the national trend is for big supermarkets to close, the fact Aldi is coming will be a big boost to employment.

“Once people are in the town centre, I hope that they stop to use some of the specialist shops on the High Street and its surroundings.”

Indicating the council’s approval, case officer Murray Agnew writes the store will look “modern and fairly conventional” along with landscaping proposals.

He states: “The development would result in a reduction in available retail floor space on the site and on that basis the proposal would not lead to a significant or unacceptable impact on the town centre of Montrose.”

Montrose’s former Co-op had been in business in the town since January 2010.

Before that the site had been a Somerfield supermarket for 37 years.

At present the unoccupied car park is being used as an overflow for the train station.

Aldi has stated it will bring in parking restrictions once the store is open, although it is “too early to say at the moment” how these will affect shoppers and people catching trains from the town.
