Women sentenced over brick attack at Kirkcaldy birthday party

Two Kirkcaldy women have been sentenced for a vicious attack on a man at a 21st birthday party, during which he was hit on the head with a brick.

The celebrations ended in violence when the victim was accused of being a sex offender and was then attacked.

The fight between two males spilled out into the garden, where the two females joined in the assault on the victim.

The assault resulted in a court appearance for Megan McKinnon, 21, and Anne Marie Russell, 37, both of Dunsire Street, Kirkcaldy.

They previously admitted that on February 22 last year at Dunsire Street, acting together, they assaulted a man by repeatedly punching him on the head and body and striking him on the head with a brick, all to his injury.

Dunfermline Sheriff Court previously heard the party was for the birthday of the victim’s on-off girlfriend. Alcohol was consumed and spirits were good initially but the atmosphere changed later.

There was an allegation made that the complainer was a registered sex offender and that his name had recently been in the local press in relation to this.

He was confronted by a male in the living room and an argument ensued that became physical and the complainer was headbutted.

The victim then became involved in another physical confrontation with a male, which spilled out into the garden. At this point McKinnon and Russell became involved, assaulting the complainer.

Russell struck him on the back of the head with a brick and both repeatedly punched the man on the head and body.

The victim managed to break free, ran off into another street and phoned the police.

Depute fiscal Fiona Nairn said the victim was taken to the Victoria Hospital suffering from a cut, swelling and bruising to his forehead, a swollen and deviated nose and a swollen lip.

Sheriff Craig McSherry placed both women on community payback orders each with 200 hours of unpaid work.

In Russell’s case, there will also be supervision.
