Rare images of the Scottish Trials of 1905, including the photograph of cars outside a hotel in Aberfeldy.

A rare photograph of some of the earliest cars to be driven through Perthshire is to be sold at auction.

The snap, taken in 1905, shows two vehicles parked outside the Breadalbane Arms Hotel in Aberfeldy.

The cars were taking part in the Scottish Trials, which saw the early motorists cross the country on a circucular route from Glasgow.

It is expected that the lot containing the image will fetch £1,200 when it goes under the hammer at Bonhams on October 31.

The photograph forms part of a collection known as the Argent Archer Archive, which includes images taken across the UK during the early years of motoring.

Bonhams’ Toby Wilson said: “Argent Archer was essentially the founding father of automotive photography in the UK.

“It is exceptionally unusual to find Victorian and Edwardian motoring photographs, so to see so many in one collection is quite incredible.

“This is a remarkable and important archive of pioneer and veteran motoring photographs.”
