Dundee’s Premiership report card

Paul Hartley has got good reason to smile.

Now that Dundee have played all of the other Premiership sides, it is perhaps time to reflect upon how the campaign has gone so far.

As you would expect, there have been highs and lows.

The highlight arguably came on Saturday when the Dark Blues – rather more comfortably than many had anticipated – beat league-leading Hamilton Accies to claim their first home league victory of the campaign.

Mind you, the away wins over St Mirren, St Johnstone, Motherwell weren’t too shabby either.

The low point must be the 4-1 home derby defeat to Dundee United, although the performance in the League Cup game that followed at Tannadice saw significant improvement.

They have 16 points and sit in seventh spot which, while not reaching the dizzy heights Hamilton have reached, is still a decent position for a promoted team.

Back-to-back victories over Well and Accies in recent weeks has put something of a shine back on Dundee’s season.

Confidence will be gathered from Saturday’s result in particular, given the way Hamilton have seen off the likes of Celtic and Aberdeen.

Boss Paul Hartley seems reasonably satisfied with how it is going, although managers shy away from showing too much contentment with players they want to see improve and work even harder next time around.

Overall, Dundee’s report card should read: “Good but can, and probably will, do better.”
