Industry body Tiga has called for a series of new tax incentives to drive momentum in the computer games development sector.
The group lobbied for years for the introduction of a specific games tax relief in Britain to level the playing field for UK developers struggling to compete with overseas rivals.
That objective has been achieved, but Tiga is now urging the UK Government to go further in its support of the industry.
Specifically, the group is calling for a prototype fund to be established to help start-up studios access finance, and a creative content fund to be set up to encourage the formation of new companies, content development and the generation of new intellectual property.
It suggested both funds could be financed from the proceeds of the National Lottery.
In addition, Tiga called for new tax reliefs on exports and on the cost of providing further training for staff.
The proposals are contained in Tiga’s submission to Chancellor George Osborne ahead of his Autumn Statement early next month.
“Tiga’s proposals will build up the strength, stamina, and sustainability of games businesses,” Tiga chief executive Dr Wilson said.
“Our programme also supports other sectors by incentivising training, enhancing higher education and stimulating exports.
“Tiga’s policy agenda will strengthen firms, industries and the UK economy,” he added.
