Youngsters have attended events across Tayside and Fife to mark the finale of a year of Girlguiding centenary celebrations.

Over 1000 were at the Caird Hall in Dundee for a Vision 2010 concert that saw Guides, Rainbows and Brownies renew their Guiding promise in a video link with girls around the UK.

Girls across the country linked up at exactly 8.10pm on Wednesday 20:10, 20.10, 2010 to launch their vision for the future in celebration of Girlguiding UK’s centenary.

County commissioner for Girlguiding Dundee Ann Gordon said months of preparation had gone into the event.

She said, “The girls were taught a special dance based around the history of the Guides and also performed a Scottish country centenary dance.

“Members of the Trefoil Guild, who are all ex-Guiders, acted as stewards at the concert, too. The girls were very excited.”

In Fife, around 1300 girls and adult volunteers gathered in the Fife Institute in Glenrothes to renew their promise. The evening also included singing, dancing, bands and displays.

And in Perth, around 650 girls gathered at Bell’s Sports Centre.

This included a presentation of all the celebrations that had taken place during the year, as well as discussing thoughts for the future and ceilidh dancing.

The event was rounded off with fireworks on the Inch.

A gathering in the Reid Hall in Forfar was the finale of a successful Angus contribution to the nationwide celebration.

Lesley Millar, of Girlguiding Angus, said, “We launched our centenary celebrations in September last year, with launch parties all over the county and had a fantastic county launch at our Crystal Palace Rally camp at Ladenford.”

The year’s events, involving all ages, have taken Rainbows, Brownies and Guides to a host of locations and attractions in Angus and beyond and, in June, Glamis hosted one of the main anniversary events, a centenary spectacular.

That was followed by a 100-hour camp at the beginning of July, and as well as looking forward the body also cast its eye over past successes at a series of heritage exhibitions around Angus towns.

“On top of all these ‘in-house’ events we have had Brownies take part in centenary celebrations at Dalguise and Netherurd, we had Guides visit Pax Lodge in London and the Centenary Maze, we have had Guides, senior section and leaders take part in the Scottish and UK centenary camps, and Trefoil Guild members go on centenary tours throughout the UK,” added Lesley.

“It has certainly been a busy year!”
