Dundee University’s new rector, Hollywood A-lister Brian Cox, says he is “touched” to have been elected as a figurehead for students and has reaffirmed his commitment to fight their corner.

The Dundee-born actor was speaking as he was given an “informal” welcome to university life at the students’ union.

Crowds of students many of them sporting ‘I Cox’ T-shirts turned out for an American-style pep rally showcasing the abilities of the institution’s 60-odd student societies.

The Emmy Award winner had earlier attended his first meeting of the university’s governing court, where a plan to cut staff and budgets was on the agenda. He said he had spoken out for the students’ concerns during the meeting and would continue to do so.

“I’m humbled to have been elected rector. I’m touched by it,” Mr Cox said before taking to the stage at the student union’s Mono venue.

“I have been elected to stand up for students that’s my job. As long as I know what I am talking about and I can stick up for the students, I will do that.

“A lot of great things are happening here, and a lot of great things are possible, but there is a lot of hesitation about cuts and people need to be realistic about that.”

After a video showing messages from former rectors Fred MacAulay, Stephen Fry and Lorraine Kelly, Mr Cox was introduced to squeals of approval from the hundreds cramming the red-white-and-blue bedecked venue.

“He’s far too down-to-earth, even for a Dundonian,” said Ms Kelly during her segment, also addressing the new rector as “gorgeous.”

“I don’t think there’s another A-list Hollywood star who you feel you could sit down with and tell him all your problems,” she said.

Dundee University Students Association’s Chris Browne said, “Brian has known this city in bad times and good times and he knows what makes people tick and what is good for the city.”

University principal Pete Downes added, “Brian has a love for the city and respect for its people and that, coupled with his achievements, mean it’s wonderful that he’s representing the university’s students.”
